Sketchbook Play : The Art of Keeping a Visual Journal

Come learn to play, sketch, paint and record your daily life in a handmade book.
This class is geared for the sketch-phobic, the ultimate beginner,
the "I always meant to," the "when I retire", the imperfectly perfect Artist in all of us.
No experience needed, no magical talents requested,
just bring your own wonderful self.

In this class we will spend the first week creating our very own long stitch bound
sketchbook using vintage book covers, hot press watercolor paper, and waxed linen thread.
This simple bookbinding method is delightful because our books will open flat
giving us full access to all of our pages.

Weeks two through six we will learn the basics of contour drawing using everyday
objects as our models. We will continue on learning about watercolor techniques,
hand-lettering, fancy borders and more!

Classes will begin with a demonstration and are followed up with plenty of work time
which includes, coaching, and creative cheerleading from Suki.

We will study and draw botanicals, vintage household curiosities, gifts from the sea
and forest, and anything else that strikes our fancy. We will embrace recording
our daily lives and objects in a visual format, which is such a treat to
look back through and treasure.

Dates: Wednesday's, April 15th-May 20th
Time: 6-8:30pm
Location: Bird's Eye View Studio,
3934 NE 16th Ave. Portland, OR 97212
Cost: $175 plus a $25 material fee.
Your material fee covers the cost of your handmade sketchbook
and an 02 micron pen. There is an additional small supply
list of a few brushes, and inexpensive set of watercolors
and a few pens.

Fingers and toes crossed for everyone!

  1. I would so love to win a spot in your class. I have been wanting to start a regular sketchbook practice for several years and have not been able to do it for a variety of reasons: lack of guidance, a full time job, a small child to parent, etc. I saw your class and desperately wanted to sign up but I don't have the financial resources to do so. It would be such a gift to me to get to take the class, and one I would share with my daughter at home as well. Thank you for any consideration.

  2. Late Autumn I purchased two beautiful books: teaching about creating a visual journal, based in the NorthWest where I live, and sketching, a fabulous guide! I have practiced some and so would love some actual instruction by an artist! I always say I will sign up for a class, but working in an elementary school on top of family seems to distract me from following through!

  4. Since moving to Portland, I am on a sharp learning curve in the creative arts. I started off at IPRC in the poetry certificate program (later volunteering and even serving on the Board). Followed by various writing workshops around town. I have been doing book arts since the early 2000's but still have so much to learn. I am a member of a local book arts group and received a scholarship to the Focus On Book Arts conference 2 yrs ago. I have made paper at Pulp & Deckle and, of course, book arts at Collage. Most recently I have been taking art classes at PCC (comics, drawing, brush painting) and currently at MAC (artistic anatomy). I have also studied calligraphy but need much more practice.
I just can't get enough of this right brain stimulation. I find work in one medium inspires me in another and both benefit.
But, funding my passion becomes a challenge so getting this generous scholarship would allow me to add a course I've had my eye on. (I had already registered for 2 classes at MAC when I received your email about your new workshop. I missed the last one, though was on a wait list. Timing!)
Look forward to working with you, hopefully sooner rather than later.
    Fingers crossed.

  5. Sketchbook Play would be a chance to commit to self-care through regular art journaling in a class of peers. It would also be a chance to challenge myself in an art form that would feel too daunting outside of this supported space. This class has been cost prohibitive for me in the past, but it has always been the class I window shopped. It would be art therapy and colorful self-expression, as I live a new chapter with a lot of change.

  6. Photography has become my passion lately, but my earlier passion from 20 years ago still remains silk painting. Many years before silk painting, drawing was my favorite medium, but those skills seem to have faded away with time. I would love to translate the images I capture into drawings, this would be the bridge to silk painting again. What a blast it would be to start drawing again!

  10. This class sounds absolutely wonderful. Art feeds my soul and I have always wanted to do journaling but never seem to be able to keep with it. I think having companionship and a teacher to guide me would be wonderful. Thank you for generously providing the opportunity for someone to grow in their art.

  12. This is fantastic!! I've been wanting to take an art class since I moved to Portland two years ago but never seemed to get around to it. It was easy to take different kinds of art classes in high school and I was even able to enjoy some in college to keep my creative bone alive but it's been so long since I have now! Plus, I've always been terrible at sketches and putting any sketch book I've owned to good use so hopefully this will help get me goin!! Thanks so much for giving all of us this awesome opportunity!
